Biography

Tom is a commercial litigator with expertise in handling complex commercial disputes.

Tom specialises in complex commercial litigation across a range of sectors, including commodities, financial services and luxury assets. He has extensive experience of English High Court litigation and has worked both for claimants and defendants in a number of high-profile disputes.

Prior to joining Signature, Tom trained and qualified as a solicitor at international law firm Clyde & Co. in 2012. He spent six months working in the Firm’s Dubai office, working as part of its corporate insurance team and has also spent time on secondment with a major international insurer.

Experience

  • Acting for Defendants in respect of a Commercial Court claim for circa US$300 million arising out of disputed repo contracts for the sale and purchase of nickel.
  • Acting for a BVI company in Chancery Court proceedings to protect its legal and beneficial title to a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat valued at circa US$15 million. This complex matter involved multiple claims to ownership and security interests, urgent injunctive relief and obtaining discovery in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Acting for a Kazakh bank with a broad mandate to identify and take steps to recover assets siphoned out of the bank by its previous chairman in one of the largest frauds in recent history.
  • Acting for a New York based introducing broker in a deceit claim arising from the introduction of a fraudulently managed hedge fund to a large prime broker.
  • Acting for a third party respondent to a search order made against a Defendant to a US$3 billion fraud claim in the High Court, involving a large scale review and disclosure of electronic documents.
  • Advising a UHNW family and investment fund claiming circa US$800 million against a Swiss banking entity for losses arising out of the fraudulent handling and investment of family assets by employees of the bank and its sister companies.
  • Worked as part of a small team which received The Lawyer’s “Litigation Team of the Year 2015” award, acting against Companies House for negligently publishing a winding up order against the wrong company.
  • Claim for fraudulent deceit brought by the liquidators of Rangers Football Club against its solicitors for advice provided leading up to an attempted takeover of the club.
  • Acting for a magic circle law firm co-operating with an SRA investigation into professional conduct issues following judgment in a billion US dollar claim in the Commercial Court.
  • Acting for Lloyds insurers and Clifford Chance in JP Morgan v BVG v Clifford Chance; Claim by JP Morgan against the Berlin transport authority for money owed under a synthetic CDO which became due following the financial crisis.
